Why are my tree's leaves turning yellow?

Foliage fading from green to yellow well before autumn — sometimes with the veins still standing out dark green, sometimes across the whole crown at once.

Watch it, correct the care behind it, and check again next season. Nothing here threatens people or property in its current state.

Yellow foliage on its own is a message, not a countdown. A tree can carry a pale crown for years. What changes the assessment is yellowing paired with branch dieback, or a second consecutive summer of it after you have corrected the watering.

What this looks like

Summer foliage in Kansas should read as a saturated, slightly dusty green. When it goes wrong it usually goes one of two ways. Either the tissue between the veins turns pale yellow while the vein network stays green, so the leaf looks like a road map, or the entire leaf dulls to a uniform yellow-green and the crown looks washed out from across the street. The first pattern points at the soil chemistry. The second points at water, roots, or both.

What causes it in Kansas

Roughly in order of how often each turns out to be the answer here. The line under each one is what separates it from the others — open a cause for the detail.

  1. 1Iron chlorosis in high-pH soil

    How to tell: Yellow between green veins, newest growth first, and it repeats every year on the same tree while a neighboring hackberry looks perfect.

    Most Kansas soil is alkaline, and above about pH 7.5 iron and manganese lock into forms roots cannot absorb. The iron is in the ground; the tree simply cannot reach it. Pin oak is the textbook case here, with silver maple, red maple, and river birch close behind.

  2. 2Saturated soil and poor drainage

    How to tell: Soil that is still damp when you dig down four to six inches, oldest interior leaves yellowing and dropping first.

    Roots need air. In tight clay, a low spot, a downspout aimed at the root zone, or an irrigation system running on a summer schedule can hold water long enough to suffocate fine roots, and the crown yellows as though it were drought-stricken.

  3. 3Drought stress

    How to tell: Yellowing arrives with crisp brown edges and afternoon wilting, and follows a stretch of hot, rainless weeks.

    The opposite problem produces a similar color. During a Kansas dry spell a tree pulls resources back from the foliage it can no longer support, and leaves yellow and shed early. Trees in lawn strips, parking islands, and new subdivisions run out of water first.

  4. 4Root injury you have already forgotten

    How to tell: Yellowing is heaviest on the side of the tree facing the disturbance, and you can trace a cut, a new slab, or a grade change on that side.

    Trenching for a sprinkler line, a new driveway, a utility repair, added fill soil, or years of heavy equipment parking over the root zone. The canopy response lags the damage by two to five years, which is why almost nobody connects the two.

  5. 5A girdling root or a trunk buried too deep

    How to tell: The trunk enters the ground like a fence post with no visible flare, or one root crosses hard against the trunk at soil level.

    A root that circles the trunk slowly strangles the tissue moving food down to the roots. Nursery stock planted too deep and trees mulched into a mound do the same thing from the outside in.

  6. 6Sap-feeding insects

    How to tell: Shiny, sticky leaves, fine pale stippling, or bumps along the twigs that scrape off with a thumbnail.

    Heavy scale, aphid, or spider mite populations drain enough sap to fade the foliage. This is the least common cause of a genuinely yellow crown and the easiest to confirm or rule out in two minutes.

What to do, and what to avoid

Safe to check yourself

All from the ground — no ladder, no saw.

  • Hold a yellow leaf up to the light: green veins on yellow tissue is chlorosis, uniform yellow is not
  • Dig a small hole four to six inches deep at the drip line before you decide the tree is thirsty
  • Find the root flare — the trunk should widen where it meets the soil, and if it does not, something is buried
  • Check the underside of a dozen leaves for insects, stippling, or stickiness

What not to do

The responses that make this one worse or permanent.

  • Do not fertilize a tree that is short of water; nitrogen pushes growth the roots cannot supply
  • Do not dump soil sulfur or an acidifier on the lawn expecting to change the pH of a mature tree's root zone — it does not work at that scale
  • Do not add water on a fixed schedule without checking the soil first, since overwatering and drought look nearly identical from the sidewalk
  • Do not pile mulch against the trunk while you are out there fixing everything else

When to contact an arborist

Yellowing comes with thinning or dead branches, returns worse for a second season after you have corrected the watering, or affects a mature tree you intend to keep. Chlorosis in a large tree is treated with trunk injections or soil applications that are dosed by trunk diameter — worth having done properly rather than repeatedly and ineffectively.

Will iron fertilizer from the garden center fix a chlorotic tree?

Sprayed on the leaves it produces a temporary green-up that lasts a few weeks and does nothing for next year's growth. Broadcast on the soil in an alkaline yard, most of it locks up before roots reach it. Lasting correction in a large tree generally means trunk injection by someone with the equipment to dose it correctly.

Why is my pin oak yellow when the neighbor's oak looks fine?

It is probably a different oak. Bur oak and chinquapin oak handle Kansas alkalinity comfortably; pin oak evolved in acidic bottomland soils and struggles here. Two oaks fifty feet apart can have completely different relationships with the same soil.

My tree yellowed and dropped half its leaves in August. Is it dying?

Usually not. Early leaf drop is a stress response that protects the tree by reducing the amount of foliage it has to supply. Judge it next spring: a tree that leafs out fully and holds its foliage into September has recovered.
