Why are my tree's leaves turning brown?

Leaf edges and tips turning tan or brown and going papery, often with a narrow yellow band between the dead margin and the green center.

Watch it, correct the care behind it, and check again next season. Nothing here threatens people or property in its current state.

Scorched margins in a hot Kansas August are a tree rationing water, and that is a normal thing for a tree to do. It becomes a real concern when the same tree browns earlier each year, when brown foliage stays attached on a single limb while the rest of the crown is fine, or when the browning follows a fertilizer or de-icing product rather than the weather.

What this looks like

Damage starts where water arrives last — the outer rim of the blade and the tips between the main veins — then works inward. The dead tissue is dry and brittle rather than soft or slimy, and the leaf usually stays on the tree. On a big shade tree the effect is most obvious on the south and west faces and at the top, where sun and wind hit hardest; the shaded interior can look untouched.

  • A crisp brown margin with a yellow halo separating it from healthy green tissue
  • Worst on the exposed south and west sides, better in the shaded interior
  • Brown leaves that crumble when you close your hand on them, rather than wilting limp
  • Whole leaves browning and staying attached on one limb, which is a different and more serious pattern

What causes it in Kansas

Roughly in order of how often each turns out to be the answer here. The line under each one is what separates it from the others — open a cause for the detail.

  1. 1Leaf scorch from heat, wind, and drought

    How to tell: It appears after a specific hot, dry, windy stretch, affects several unrelated species in the same yard, and eases when the weather breaks.

    The ordinary explanation, and by a wide margin the most common one in Kansas. On a 100-degree afternoon with a south wind, a mature tree can lose water faster than roots can pull it from dry clay, and the margins dehydrate first. Recently planted trees and trees in narrow strips of soil scorch first and worst.

  2. 2A root system with nowhere to go

    How to tell: The same tree scorches every summer while an identical species twenty feet away in open lawn does not.

    Trees in sidewalk strips, parking islands, and beds ringed by concrete run a permanent water deficit no irrigation schedule fully solves. Compacted subsoil in newer subdivisions does the same thing, since roots cannot exploit soil they cannot penetrate.

  3. 3Salt and fertilizer burn

    How to tell: Damage concentrated on the side facing pavement, or a sharp increase within two weeks of a fertilizer or ice-melt application.

    De-icing salt from a drive or street, water-softener discharge, dog urine on a young trunk, or too much lawn fertilizer applied over the root zone all pull water out of roots chemically. The leaf symptom is indistinguishable from drought scorch; the timing and location are what give it away.

  4. 4Bacterial leaf scorch

    How to tell: Browning starts in mid-summer rather than during a heat spike, recurs annually on the same limbs, and shows a distinct yellow or reddish band at the boundary of the dead tissue.

    A xylem-dwelling bacterium spread by leafhoppers, established in pin oak, red oak, sycamore, elm, and sweetgum. It is chronic and incurable: the tree browns a little earlier and a little more thoroughly every year, limb by limb, over five to ten years.

  5. 5Herbicide contact

    How to tell: It appears within days of an application, stops abruptly at a height or property line, and often comes with twisted, cupped new growth.

    Spray drift or vapor movement from lawn and pasture weed control burns leaf margins, particularly on young, thin-leaved trees near a treated area.

  6. 6Anthracnose and other leaf blights

    How to tell: The brown is blotchy and vein-following rather than an even rim, and it shows up in May and June rather than August.

    Cool, wet Kansas springs favor fungi that kill irregular blotches of leaf tissue, often following the veins. Sycamore, ash, maple, and oak all have their own versions.

What to do, and what to avoid

  • Note the date the browning started and match it against the last two weeks of weather
  • Compare the shaded interior of the crown with the exposed top — real scorch respects sun and wind exposure
  • Walk the drip line looking for pavement, a salt pile, a downspout, or a recently fertilized lawn edge
  • Photograph the tree in August each year; scorch that starts earlier every season is the pattern that matters

What not to do

The responses that make this one worse or permanent.

  • Do not prune out scorched foliage in the heat — those leaves are still feeding the tree, and summer pruning adds stress
  • Do not fertilize a scorched tree, which increases the amount of leaf surface it has to keep watered
  • Do not water with a daily light sprinkle; shallow, frequent watering trains roots to stay at the surface where it is hottest
  • Do not pile fresh soil over the roots to hold moisture — depth suffocates roots faster than drought damages them

When to contact an arborist

Whole leaves brown and hang on individual limbs while the rest of the crown stays green, browning arrives earlier each year on a mature oak or elm, or scorch shows up on a tree with no drought explanation. Those three patterns suggest vascular disease rather than weather, and telling them apart takes an on-site look at the branches.

Common questions

How much water does a mature shade tree actually need in a Kansas summer?

A useful rule is about ten gallons per inch of trunk diameter, delivered slowly, every seven to fourteen days with no rain. Applied at the drip line rather than at the trunk, and soaked in deeply enough to wet the top eight to twelve inches of soil.

Do scorched leaves recover?

The dead margin does not turn green again. The tree recovers, not the leaf. Judge the outcome by next spring's leaf-out, not by trying to rescue this year's foliage.

Is bacterial leaf scorch treatable?

There is no cure. Antibiotic injections can suppress symptoms for a season and have to be repeated, which is a decision about a specific tree's value rather than a general recommendation. Confirming the diagnosis first is worth doing, because ordinary drought scorch needs none of that.
