Why are small branches falling from my tree?

Twigs and small branches accumulating on the lawn, drive, or roof — sometimes with green leaves still attached, sometimes gray and brittle.

Watch it, correct the care behind it, and check again next season. Nothing here threatens people or property in its current state.

Twigs and small branches on the lawn are usually routine, and the cut end tells you which routine. What changes the picture is size and pattern: branches thicker than your wrist coming down in ordinary weather, or a steady increase in what you are picking up each week, both point at a crown that is shedding structure rather than housekeeping.

What this looks like

Pick one up and look at the broken end, because that surface is a record of how it came off. A clean angled cut like a pruning snip is an animal. A sculpted, tapered end that looks turned on a lathe with a rough center is an insect. A splintered, stringy break is wind. A gray, punky end with no live wood is deadwood that finally let go of its own weight.

What causes it in Kansas

Roughly in order of how often each turns out to be the answer here. The line under each one is what separates it from the others — open a cause for the detail.

  1. 1Squirrel pruning

    How to tell: Clean 45-degree cuts, green leaves still fresh, and usually a squirrel visible in the tree while you are looking at the evidence.

    Squirrels cut small branches for nest material and to reach buds and nuts, and they do it in volume. Elms, oaks, maples, and honeylocust in Kansas neighborhoods can drop a startling amount of green material in a week with no harm at all.

  2. 2Twig girdlers and twig pruners

    How to tell: The cut looks machined — a smooth conical taper around a small broken center — and the fallen twigs are all roughly the same diameter.

    Beetles that sever small branches deliberately: the female girdles a twig so the wood dies, then lays eggs in the severed section, which drops. Hackberry, elm, oak, pecan, and honeylocust are the Kansas favorites, and the drop comes in late summer and fall.

  3. 3Natural self-pruning

    How to tell: Small, thin, gray twigs from inside the canopy, with no leaves and no fresh break.

    Interior twigs that end up shaded by the canopy above them stop paying their way, and the tree abandons them. This is normal maintenance and continues for the life of the tree.

  4. 4Cicada damage

    How to tell: Rows of small slits along the underside of the twig, browning tips in July, and cicadas audible for weeks beforehand.

    Female cicadas slit small branches to lay eggs, and the ends beyond the damage wilt and break. In a heavy year the effect on a young tree is dozens of brown 'flags' hanging in the canopy.

  5. 5Deadwood shedding

    How to tell: The wood is gray and dry through its whole thickness, and the crown above has visible dead limbs still in place.

    Every mature tree carries some deadwood, and it comes down eventually. A sharp increase in the volume of dead material means the crown is producing more of it, which is a decline signal rather than a branch problem.

  6. 6Storm breakage

    How to tell: It all happened on one night, and it is scattered downwind of the tree rather than under it.

    Wind, hail, and ice snap small wood, and the debris arrives all at once rather than gradually.

What to do, and what to avoid

Safe to check yourself

All from the ground — no ladder, no saw.

  • Examine the broken end of half a dozen pieces before drawing any conclusion
  • Note the diameter — consistent sizing across many pieces suggests an insect or an animal, wide variation suggests weather
  • Scan the crown from the ground for dead limbs still attached, especially over the drive and roof
  • Keep a rough count week to week; the trend matters more than any single armload

What not to do

The responses that make this one worse or permanent.

  • Do not spray for twig girdlers, which is ineffective and unnecessary — collecting and disposing of the fallen twigs is the actual control, since the larvae are inside them
  • Do not ignore repeated drops of larger wood in calm weather
  • Do not park under a tree that is shedding dead limbs while you decide what to do
  • Do not attempt to remove hanging dead branches from a ladder

When to contact an arborist

Branches thicker than about two inches are failing in ordinary weather, the volume increases season over season, or the crown holds dead limbs above a driveway, patio, walk, or play area. Deadwood removal on a large tree is rope-and-saddle work, and it is the cheapest safety improvement available on most mature trees.

Common questions

The twigs have green leaves and a clean cut. Should I be worried?

Almost never. That combination is squirrel work, and while the volume can be remarkable during a heavy nut year, it does not damage an established tree. Rake it up and move on.

What is summer branch drop?

The uncommon phenomenon of a large, apparently healthy horizontal limb failing on a hot, still afternoon, most often on oak, elm, maple, and cottonwood. It is poorly understood, unpredictable, and is one reason long horizontal limbs over patios and parking deserve a professional look rather than a guess.

Do I need to clean up the twigs?

For twig girdler infestations, yes — the next generation is developing inside the fallen wood, and removing it breaks the cycle. Otherwise it is purely a housekeeping decision.
