Why is my tree leaning, and is it about to fall?

A tree tilting to one side, with soil cracked, mounded, or lifted on the side opposite the lean, or roots pulling out of the ground.

Treat the ground beneath the tree as off limits and get eyes on it now. These are the conditions that end in something falling.

The decisive question is whether the lean is new. A tree that has leaned the same way for twenty years has built reinforcing wood along the load path and is usually stable. A tree that leans more than it did last month, especially with cracked or heaved soil on the upslope side, has a root plate that is already failing and should be treated as an emergency.

What this looks like

Look at the ground before you look at the tree. A stable long-term lean has undisturbed soil and grass right up to the trunk, and the trunk often curves so the upper crown stands vertical. A failing tree has a distinct arc of cracked or raised soil on the side away from the lean where the root plate is levering up, sometimes with a matching depression on the leaning side, and the trunk is straight while the whole tree tilts.

  • Roots visibly pulling out of the ground or torn on the upslope side
  • A gap opening between the trunk and the soil on the leaning side

What causes it in Kansas

Roughly in order of how often each turns out to be the answer here. The line under each one is what separates it from the others — open a cause for the detail.

  1. 1Root plate failure

    How to tell: New lean plus disturbed soil, following rain and wind. Treat as an emergency.

    Saturated clay loses much of its ability to hold anchoring roots, and a strong Kansas wind on a wet spring day is all it takes. The plate lifts, the tree tilts, and it may hold in that position for hours, weeks, or the rest of the season before finishing the fall.

  2. 2Root decay

    How to tell: A lean that developed gradually without a storm, often with conks or mushrooms at the base.

    Root and butt rot removes anchorage invisibly, and the tree leans when the remaining roots can no longer hold the crown. Often the crown still looks acceptable.

  3. 3Roots cut on one side

    How to tell: Recent excavation on one side, and the tree leans away from that side.

    Trenching for utilities, a new sidewalk, a driveway, or a foundation can sever the anchoring roots on one side. The tree may stand for several years and then go over in a wind it would previously have shrugged off.

  4. 4Natural phototropic and wind lean

    How to tell: The lean has been there as long as you can remember, the soil is undisturbed, and the trunk curves so the top is upright.

    Trees grow toward light and away from prevailing wind. Kansas trees in open country routinely carry a permanent set from the south wind. This kind of lean develops over decades and the tree builds reaction wood to support it.

  5. 5Poor nursery stock and staking

    How to tell: A small or young tree, leaning from its earliest years, with a thin trunk relative to its height.

    A young tree that was never properly straightened, or one left staked so long it never developed trunk taper, may lean permanently as it grows.

  6. 6Soil erosion and bank undercutting

    How to tell: The ground itself has moved — a cut bank, a washout, or a slumping slope beneath the tree.

    Trees on creek banks, drainage swales, and slopes lose their footing as soil moves. Common along Kansas waterways after heavy runoff.

What to do, and what to avoid

  • Walk a wide circle and look at the soil on the side opposite the lean — that is where a failing root plate shows first
  • Compare against an old photograph; angle change over time is the single most useful piece of evidence you can produce
  • Note what is in the fall zone, including in the direction the tree would swing rather than only straight ahead
  • Move vehicles and keep people out of the zone before doing anything else

What not to do

The responses that make this one worse or permanent.

  • Do not try to winch, cable, or pull a leaning mature tree upright — the anchoring roots are already broken and the tree can come over on whatever is pulling
  • Do not dig, add soil, or run water near the root plate, all of which reduce what little anchorage remains
  • Do not sleep in a room on the lean side, or park there, until it has been assessed
  • Do not assume a tree is safe because it stopped moving; root plates hold in a partially failed position all the time

When to contact an arborist

Immediately for any new or increasing lean, any lean with disturbed soil at the base, or any lean toward a house, road, or utility line. If the tree is near a power line, contact the utility rather than a tree service first. This is one of the few tree conditions where the reasonable response is to leave the area and make the call from somewhere else.

Common questions

My tree has leaned for years. Is it going to fall?

A long-standing lean with undisturbed soil and a crown that has grown around the angle is usually stable — trees are good at reinforcing a load they have carried for a long time. What changes that is decay at the base, a big increase in crown weight, or saturated soil in a strong wind. Old leans deserve a periodic look, not alarm.

Can a leaning tree be straightened?

Small, recently planted trees can be reset and staked successfully. Established trees cannot: the anchoring roots on the tension side are already broken, and the tree will not re-anchor. For a mature tree the realistic choices are removal or, occasionally, monitoring if there is genuinely nothing at risk.

How far can a tree lean before it is dangerous?

There is no angle that answers it. A fifteen-degree lean with fresh soil cracking is far more dangerous than a thirty-degree lean the tree has held since it was young. What matters is whether the lean is changing, whether the root plate has moved, and what stands underneath.
