Why did my evergreen turn brown?

Needles or scale foliage going tan, gray-green, purple-brown, or rust colored — on one side, from the bottom up, from the inside out, or all at once.

Not an emergency this afternoon, but the window for a useful response is measured in weeks. Left alone, most of these get more expensive rather than less.

Evergreens do not forgive. Deciduous trees rebuild their foliage every spring; conifers hold needles for two to five years and mostly cannot regenerate growth from bare wood, so brown is usually permanent. One case is a genuine emergency for the neighborhood rather than the tree: a pine killed by pine wilt must be removed and destroyed before the following May to keep the beetles that carry it from moving to the next pine.

What this looks like

The pattern of the browning is the diagnosis, and there are four distinct patterns. Brown that starts in the interior of the tree and leaves the outer growth green is usually seasonal and normal. Brown that starts at the bottom and moves up is a needle disease. Brown on the windward or sun-facing side only is winter injury. And a whole tree turning gray-green then brown within a few weeks, with the needles hanging on, is pine wilt — which is fatal and contagious to other pines.

What causes it in Kansas

Roughly in order of how often each turns out to be the answer here. The line under each one is what separates it from the others — open a cause for the detail.

  1. 1Pine wilt

    How to tell: Rapid whole-tree browning in summer or fall with needles still firmly attached, and cut branches that are dry with no resin flow.

    A microscopic nematode carried tree to tree by the pine sawyer beetle. It blocks water movement and kills a mature pine in a matter of weeks to months. Scots pine is essentially untenable in eastern Kansas because of it, and Austrian pine is also killed. It is the single most consequential conifer problem in the state.

  2. 2Bagworms

    How to tell: Small cone-shaped bags hanging from the branches — look before assuming a disease.

    Heavy feeding strips needles and scale foliage, and because conifers rarely refoliate bare wood, the brown is permanent even after the insects are gone.

  3. 3Winter desiccation

    How to tell: Damage sharply limited to exposed faces, needle tips browner than needle bases, and it becomes visible in late winter rather than during the growing season.

    Evergreens keep transpiring on sunny winter days while the soil is frozen and cannot resupply water. Kansas wind makes this worse, and a dry autumn makes it much worse.

  4. 4Needle cast and tip blight

    How to tell: Progression from the bottom up, banded or spotted needles, and tiny black fruiting structures in rows on affected needles.

    Rhizosphaera needle cast on Colorado blue spruce and Dothistroma needle blight on Austrian pine both work from the lower, inner branches outward over several seasons. Phomopsis and Kabatina blights kill juniper tips.

  5. 5Spider mites

    How to tell: Stippled, dusty-looking needles and moving specks when you tap a branch over white paper.

    Spruce and juniper mites feed in cool spring and fall weather and give the foliage a dull bronze cast rather than a clean brown.

  6. 6Normal seasonal shed

    How to tell: Only the innermost, oldest needles are affected, the change is uniform around the tree, and it happens in September and October.

    Every conifer drops its oldest needles. On white pine and arborvitae the autumn yellowing of interior foliage is dramatic enough to alarm people every single year.

What to do, and what to avoid

  • Cut a branch an inch thick on a browning pine and look for resin — a dry cut with no pitch strongly suggests pine wilt
  • Establish the direction of progression: bottom-up, inside-out, one-sided, or all at once
  • Look for bags before looking for diseases
  • Note the date; browning that appears in March on the windward side is last winter's damage, not a current infection

What not to do

The responses that make this one worse or permanent.

  • Do not leave a pine-wilt-killed tree standing into the next spring — the beetles that carry the nematode emerge from the dead wood and move to healthy pines
  • Do not stack the wood from a wilt-killed pine for firewood without chipping or burning it before May
  • Do not shear a brown juniper or arborvitae back into bare wood expecting regrowth; it will not resprout
  • Do not fertilize a browning evergreen in an attempt to green it up

When to contact an arborist

A pine browns rapidly in summer or fall, an evergreen declines from the bottom up for more than one season, or a large conifer near a structure is dead or dying. Pine wilt is confirmed by laboratory testing of wood samples, and the removal timeline that follows is the part that protects other pines nearby.

Common questions

Can pine wilt be treated?

Not once a tree has it. Preventive trunk injections exist for high-value pines and must be applied before infection and repeated on a cycle. For a tree already browning, the only useful action is prompt removal and destruction of the wood.

My blue spruce is losing branches from the bottom up. Is that the same thing?

No, and the distinction matters. Bottom-up decline over several years on Colorado blue spruce is typically Rhizosphaera needle cast or cytospora canker. Both are chronic rather than sudden, and both are made worse by the crowding, overhead irrigation, and heat that Kansas plantings tend to provide.

Will winter-burned foliage green up again?

The brown needles will not, but the buds behind them often survive. Wait until new growth extends in May before removing anything. If the buds push, the tree fills back in; if they do not, that section of branch is finished.
